This is the house Ernie was born in. It used to sit a mile outside of town but was moved to create the museum in the mid '70s.
I’ve been busy vacationing, so I haven’t had much time to post in the last couple weeks. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday a couple of friends and I went to Cedar Point. Sadly — because I’m SO GOOD at planning ahead — my camera’s batteries died before I had a chance to take even one photo there. Today, my parents and I spent some family time at the Ernie Pyle museum in Dana, Indiana, and I did manage to get pictures of that.
- This is the house’s parlor. Most of the furniture in the house did not originally belong to Ernie’s parents. This rocking chair, however, did.
- The house’s bedroom
- A wider view of the bedroom
- The living room
- A shaving mirror located in the kitchen
- The house’s original telephone
- Good advice
- Look at the awesome feet on that table!
- Some of Ernie’s things, including his typewriter, Zippo lighter, shaving razor, hat and purple heart.
- Typewriter
- A Personna-brand shaving razor (the company still exists)
- Ernie is wearing this hat in almost every war photo ever taken of him.
- This Purple Heart was awarded to Ernie posthumously. However, after 1997 civilians could no longer be awarded the Purple Heart.
- This flag was used to cover Ernie’s coffin when he was moved from Ie Shima to the “Punchbowl” cemetery in Hawaii. The rifle belonged to a captured Japanese soldier.
- Ernie wore this jacket when he met Eleanor Roosevelt. Notice the frayed elbows.
- This memorial is in a park a half mile away from the museum. It’s an exact replica of the one that sits over the site in Ie Shima where he was killed.

Nice photos — all of them. Hope the trip to Dana was fun. I hope to go some day to the museum.
